Want to turn that photo you just shot on your iPhone into your Facebook profile picture? Sure thing—and yes, you can do it directly from the Facebook mobile app.
Read on for more gotta-try features in the rapidly evolving Facebook for iPhone app, from how to filter your news feed to an easy way to save snapshots posted by your friends.

1. Filter your news feed

Don’t have time to scroll through dozens of random news feed updates? I know the feeling.
Instead, try this: when you first open your news feed on the Facebook for iPhone app, pull down on the first update you see.
When you do, you’ll open Facebook’s mobile news feed filter, which lets you view only the most recent updates, posts from those on your various Friend Lists (such as Family and Close Friends), photo posts, and more.

2. Save a photo to your Camera Roll

Until recently, there was no way to save a photo from your Facebook news feed to your iPhone other than taking a screenshot.

Thanks to a recent Facebook for iPhone update, you can now save photos posted by friends to your iPhone’s Camera Roll.

• Tap a photo in your news feed to open it.
• Tap the three-dot menu button at the bottom of the screen.
• Tap the “Save Photo” button.

3. Change your profile photo or your “cover” image

Want to customize the look of your Facebook timeline while you’re on the go?
No problem—and in fact, you can easily replace your Facebook profile image or the “cover” photo at the top of your timeline with a fresh snapshot from your iPhone.

• Tap the menu button in the top-left corner of the screen, then tap your name to go to your timeline.
• Tap either your profile photo or the larger “cover” photo, then tap “Choose from Library” to pick a new image from your iPhone’s photo library, or “Take Photo” to snap a new image on the fly.

Tap the little arrow (see it?) to hide an unwanted post from your news feed.

4. Hide a post

Want to zap an annoying update or advertisement from your news feed? Easy.

• Look closely at the top-right corner of a news feed post, and you’ll see a faint downward arrow. Tap it, and a trio of buttons will slide into view.
• Tap the “Hide” button to hide an unwanted update from your news feed, or tap “Report/Mark as Spam” if you think a post is “spammy” or particularly offensive.

5. Generate a security code

Ever heard of Facebook’s “login approvals” feature? If not, you should, because it’s one of the best way to keep hackers from hijacking your account.
Once login approvals are turned on (here’s how to do it), Facebook will demand a six-digit code whenever anyone tries to log into your account from an unrecognized browser or mobile device.

Once activated, the mobile Code Generator will spit out a new six-digit security code every 30 seconds, no data connection required.

Normally, those special security codes are sent to your cell phone via SMS—but what happens if you’re trying to log into your account and there’s no cellular connection?
Luckily, the Facebook for iPhone app has its own “Code Generator” that spits out fresh six-digit codes every 30 seconds—and yes, the Code Generator works even without a data signal.
Just tap the menu button in the top-left corner of the Facebook mobile interface, scroll down, then tap Code Generator.
Once you tap the “Activate” button, a six-digit code will appear on the screen, and it’ll be refreshed every 30 seconds.

Facebook Twitter And Google User Adoption Rate Compared Guess Which Network Got To 10 Million Registered Users First GRAPH

Google+ was launched nearly a month ago on 29th June. The new social network packs quite a punch, introducing powerful new features like +Circles, +Sparks, +Hangouts (among others) which Goncalo talked about here. The new network is seeing exponential growth at the moment. It reached 10 million users within a mere 16 days after launch.
Leon Haland has expertly visualized +’s growth compared to Facebook’s and Twitter’s in their initial stages.
Facebook and Twitter took around the same time to reach 10 million users: 852 and 780 days respectively whereas Google+ only took 16 days to cover the same ground.
Now this is just outstanding growth. You can see it for yourself in the graph embedded below.

One can attribute a number of reasons why Google+ is seeing such fast growth:

The chief reason really is that the world we live in today – the world in 2011 – is a much more connected one as compared to the world when Facebook and Twitter took birth (2004 and 2006 respectively). Awareness of Facebook/Twitter took more time to spread than it did for Google+ because of the presence of Facebook/Twitter themselves. So people flocked to Google+ as soon as they heard about it on competing social networks.

The second reason is people’s dislike (pun intended) for Facebook as a company. People rightly believe that Facebook Inc. is a data-hungry company which has no regard for their user’s privacy (not that Google as a company is any better at that). Things have improved in recent times, with Facebook allowing users more control over their data. But being a Facebook user since 2007, I’ve seen the blatant disregard Facebook showed for user-privacy in the past.

Google+ was made from the ground up keeping in mind the privacy requirements of the average online social networker today, and it is successful at it: +Circles is a brilliant feature that allows users to put people they know into different social circles – just as they do in real life. Sharing is made easier thanks to this. While Facebook offers a similar Lists feature, it simply isn’t as well-implemented.

Lastly, Google+ has Google behind it and Google’s popular Gmail service means there are millions of users who already have Google accounts. All these users had to do was log in with their accounts to open up their + profile.

Still, this is what they call exponential growth.

PEN Lovers Facebook

Through my walk in photography, I have come across many circles of friends, clubs, forums and groups. Recently, I have been participating rather actively in the PEN Lovers, a Facebook group based in Malaysia (click to join).

What drew me to this particular group?

There is this new breed of photographers resulted by product of the new generation hybrid camera system (mirrorless, lens-interchange-able type). These people do not follow the general technical fanaticism as heavily practiced by usual DSLR crowd. Yet, they are serious about shooting, but mainly for the love and fun of it. Enjoying themselves in photography is the main driving force, and anything else is secondary. At the same time, they do not just simply point and shoot like typical compact camera users, they do take their time to plan and improve their shots. Just like how Olympus PEN strikes a balance and brings out the best of both DSLR and compact camera worlds, this new breed of photographers bridge the balance between DSLR and compact camera users.

Something to kill time while waiting for Simon and Thian Jin to fetch me from my work place to dinner with the PEN Lovers

I am proud to be a part of this initiative, started by Koon Yik, a friend who brought everyone together. The PEN Lovers have always had their shutter therapy sessions, going around places locally, sometimes out of the city to find photography opportunities. Every single time, everyone came back with tonnes of photos to show. It does not matter if the photograph is not National Geographic worthy, or magazine printable. The spirit of sharing and showing off our humble photographs amongst ourselves have encouraged everyone to pick up the camera to continue shooting, and this has been very positively received by many members. We inspire each other to learn from each other, and grow together in photography. Generally, everyone believes that shooting is a self-pleasure activity, and everyone is open to express themselves freely.

The PEN Lovers have been very supportive to me and my blog all this time, especially at critical times of my blog reviews on the new Olympus PEN E-P3. Their kind gesture by commenting on my blog, "liking" my blog entry, reposting my blog reviews on other sites and sharing with their friends and families, and even coming up to me and say really nice things about my reviews and photography works (which I do not deserve, really, sometimes they are being too kind) have kept me going on and on and on all these times. Their support and encouragement have been tremendously inspirational, and I was very glad I could contribute in whatever small ways in my blog review works to this community.

If you are elsewhere, or even outside of Malaysia, we still welcome you, but we do have local language slangs (Malaysian English, or Manglish) and jokes which would be alien to non-Malaysians. That aside, we are all about fun in photography. In this group, you will see what PEN cameras can really do, and why PEN is mightier than the sword.

This particular evening, I got off work sharp at 5pm (due to Ramadan, fasting month), and waited eagerly for the dinner with a group of PEN Lovers. We had really delicious Hokkien Noodles, Roasted Duck (as seen in the image), and vegetables in oyster sauce and garlic for dinner. Also, a few PEN Lovers had recently bought the newly released PEN E-P3, and brought them out on the table for everyone else to gawk and molest. It was a great evening out with friends who share the same passion in photography.
